Girls Rugby

Junior Girls Rugby is live and strong amongst the 19 Junior Clubs in Wellington. With around 430 girls registered under the age of (13), Wellington has one of the biggest junior girl player bases in the New Zealand Rugby Community.

There are several ways for girls in the Wellington region to experience and play rugby. Some clubs offer a nursery grade for our U5 players which is the beginning of their rugby playing journey. They then move on to U6 and U7 grades which introduce rugby through its non-contact form of rippa rugby. This teaches the key skills of running rugby without the tackle. From there, the WRFU Women’s Rugby Development Manager runs rugby skills development modules throughout the year.  These are 'girls only' events which enable the girls to learn fundamental rugby skills, tackle technique and build confidence in a fun and safe environment; it also provides opportunity for friendships to form, something that can be a challenge for those in teams filled with boys.

Tackle rugby is available for girls in junior club, from U8 up to and inclusive of U13.

For girls at college the numbers here are also growing. If the college you attend is currently unable to field a team contact our Women’s Rugby Development Manager and we will attempt to facilitate an arrangement with an alternative college to accommodate these players.  With the continued growth of female rugby we anticipate the expansion of college rugby grades available.

For those girls who play other sports but wouldn't mind a taste of rugby, our Women’s Rugby Development Manager is available to provide in school sessions. This provides an introduction to the sport without the commitment to a team or club. These sessions will be designed to meet the needs of the school and player.
